One of my aunts talks really fast and is an excellent story teller. She once told a story about a couple of her kids. They had been talking about wanting a dog. Then, one day a dog pooped in their driveway. What an excellent opportunity to show them one of the responsibilities of having a dog. So, she sent one of her kids out with a bag to pick it up. Completely disgusted, the child ended up throwing up on the driveway! So, she sent the next kid out to clean up the poop. If I remember the story correctly, the next kid puked as well! I don't think they talk about wanting a dog anymore. She told us this story in between laughs that had us all gasping for air and maybe some tears streaming down our faces. Her kids tried to pipe in to defend themselves with how gross it is to have to pick it up with their hands, even if a bag is being used or that it was when they were little. Needless to say, it gave all of us a good laugh, but I believe there is a lesson to be learned as well.
Sometimes we ask our Heavenly Father for something, but it is not quite what he has in mind for us. He will tell us no. We persist. Then, He may give us a small taste of what we asked for just so we can know we don't actually want that. Or maybe there is a different lesson for us to learn. Maybe it is patience, learning to slow down, finding out your house doesn't have to be perfectly clean all the time. Could it be that your family isn't perfect like you once thought, because no one is. Not even you. Maybe it's how far you can be pushed so you can see how strong you truly are. Or maybe it's even how far you need to be pushed before you reach out to Him.
No matter what it is, He has something better in mind for us. He may give us a taste of what we think we want for ourselves much like this little girl with her flower, but if we trust in Him and hand it over, He has so much more in store! You just have to wait. You just have to trust.
